Spain: Fruit juices and nectars consumption reached 830.8 million litres in 2016

  • The value of sales increased in 2016 due to the upswing in refrigerated juices and despite the slide in nectars
  • The value of exports also expanded. France remains the main export market.

Juice and nectar consumption in Spain declined notably in 2016 in terms of volume, by -6.28%, to 830.8 million liters (866 in 2015), according to recent data published by the European Fruit Juice Association (AIJN).

However, in terms of value, this category registered a slight +0.2% increase in households due to the +4.5% rise in average prices, to 0.98 euros/l at the end of the period, according to MAPAMA's 2016 Report on Food Consumption in Spain. It's also worth noting that consumption amounted to 438,828.62 million liters.

It was also clear that manufacturer brands performed the best last year, accounting for 59.4% of the total, although private label brands registered a slight upswing, from 39.7% to 40.6%.

As for flavors, orange juice continues to take the lead (31%), followed by pineapple (18.7%), peach (17.5%), multifruit (16.5%) and apple (4%).

In total, 78.3% of juice comes in cardboard packaging, while 14.6% comes in plastic and 6.7% in glass.

The data from sales channels remains stable with respect to 2015: consumers prefer the food channel (77.9%), followed by HoReCa (13.1%) and, lastly, by the impulse channel (9%).

In terms of segments, fruit juice saw a slight increase of +0.36% in consumption in terms of volume, to 367 million liters.

In this particular case, consumption of private label juices increased by +3.78%, to 168 million liters, while manufacturer's brands slipped by -2.38%, to 200 million.

The category got a real boost from refrigerated juice, which increased by +10.63%, to 48 million. Manufacturer's brands expanded by 17%, to 21 million liters. Private label products continue to dominate, with 27 million.

Nectar consumption tumbled, by -10.94%, to 464 million liters. Both manufacturer's and private label brands saw a decline, by -11.07% (294 million) and -10.71% (170 million), respectively.

Lower volume exported, but greater sales

According to data from the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, Spain is a leader in the European Union, with an export volume of 661,000 tons in 2016, totaling 603 million euros. Compared with the previous year, although the total volume exported declined by -14.2% (751,000 tons in 2015), revenues increased by +1.6% (593 million euros 2015).

As a result, the trade balance remained positive, with a surplus of 320 million euros.

France remains the main export market for Spanish juices, spending 176.83 million euros in 2016, accounting for 30% of the total exported by Spain. Great Britain comes in second, with 63.28 million; Portugal is the third largest importer, with 44 million; and Germany ranks fourth, with 34 million.

In terms of flavors, orange juice is the favorite of consumers in other countries (167.08 million euros), followed by grape juice (155.18 million), other citrus juices (92.37 million) and multifruit juices (75.89 million).

Households with kids, the main juice consumers

According to data from the 2016 Report on Food Consumption in Spain, 19.2% of juice consumed in the home are by couples with kids in their early teens, followed by couples with small children (15.5%) and households comprising retirees (15.4%).

The Canary Islands and Andalusia are the regions that consume the most juice and nectars, while Asturias, Cantabria and the Basque Country are the regions that consume the least juice.
