Alimentaria, an opportunity for Spain's agri-food industry

We begin this Newsletter with one of the leading events for the global food industry. Alimentaria 2014 kicks off next Monday, another edition of one of our sector's biggest fairs, which will provide an opportunity, at this crucial moment, for participating Spanish companies.

The event, which will be held from March 31st to April 3rd in Barcelona, will provide a platform for showcasing the latest in sector products and companies. Good luck to everyone.

We report on how the Russian government has made relations with the European Union tenser with another turn of the screw. From a political standpoint, Russia is forging ahead with its plan to annex Crimea, until now part of Ukraine, and ignoring criticism from the rest of the EU; from a commercial standpoint, Russia is holding its ground and has decided not to lift the ban on pork imports from the EU or from the Customs Union it forms with Belarus and Kazakhstan.

In Spain, we take a closer look Cooperativa Agrícola San Isidro (CASI), which is facing tough times at the moment. CASI, which specializes in tomato production, has been trying for months to adapt to issues that are causing trouble in-house, with strong discord and even lawsuits, as well as to the strategic lines of its internationalization plan. Those issues include a change in facilities for the Almería-based cooperative, a supplier agreement with Mercadona, and the entry into new markets.

We also offer a profile of the executives behind modern restaurant chains which are members of FEHRCAREM(Association of Modern Restaurant Chains). These leaders speak several languages, the're driven and, in most cases, they have international experience. They manage teams with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of workers in and often outside Spain, and they have enabled their companies to weather the economic crisis better than traditional restaurants in terms of revenues and jobs.

In this edition, we interview Gilberto Sánchez, Export Manager at ElPozo Alimentación, who tells us that the company, which operates in over 80 countries, remains focused on conquering new markets to expand its presence in Eastern Europe, among other geographies.Despite the financial crisis and its effects, ElPozo Alimentación maintains its commitment to innovation and development and to launching healthy products for consumers.
