Olive oil prevents breast cancer

Women who eat a Mediterranean diet high in extra virgin olive oil reduce their risk of developing breast cancer by up to two-thirds, according to the PREDIMED study, which began in 2003 with 7,447 participants in seven Spanish regions and analyzes the cardiovascular benefits of the Mediterranean diet. The study was published in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine, and the results were also proven in a large-scale clinical trial coordinated by the University of Navarre as part of the multi-center PREDIMED (Prevention with the Mediterranean Diet) trial and CIBERobn.

Twelve years later, the studies on the most common tumor among women continue to yield data. Nuts also offer some protection, but not enough to be statistically significant.

These results coincide with those obtained in observational studies, some of which have been carried out in Spain and financed by the Carlos III Health Institute, which now have the highest level of scientific evidence given that the clinical trial is randomized.
