Mediterranean Diet Foundation: the value of our heritage

Wikispanishfood editorial team

The Mediterranean Diet Foundation was founded in 1996 to praise and preserve the fundamental values that the diet represents for Spanish food and industry. The Foundation defends the Mediterranean Diet's cultural heritage, as well as its gastronomic and nutritional qualities. This bastion of Spanish culture has been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity and is considered by the World Health Organization to be one of the healthiest dietary patterns in the world.

The Foundation has acclaimed trustees at institutional level, such as Spain's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment; the Catalonian Regional Government's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries; and the Castile-La Mancha Regional Government's Ministry of Agriculture, among others. National companies such as Danone, Freixenet, Gallina Blanca and Argal are also trustees.

On its website, the Foundation has a decalogue of recommendations, including consuming olive oil as our main added fat; eating lots of fruits, vegetables and legumes; and consuming bread and other grain-based products every day, such as pasta and whole grain rice.
