Isabel García Tejerina (born October 9, 1968; 46 years old) has been appointed Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Environment by Spanish president Mariano Rajoy.
García Tejerina is a graduate in agricultural engineering, having majored in agricultural economics, from the Technical University of Madrid, from which she graduated cum laude. She is replacing Miguel Arias Cañete, who will represent Spain's Partido Popular in the European Parliament elections on May 25th.
García Tejerina has been Secretary General of Agriculture and Food in that same ministry since February 2012. She holds a Master's degree in European Communities (also from the Technical University of Madrid) and in Agricultural Economics (from the University of California Davis), and has extensive professional experience in the agri-food industry.
She is a former member of the Governing Council of the State Port Authority, director of Sociedad Estatal de Infraestructuras Agrarias del Norte S.A., and director of Strategic Planning at FERTIBERIA S.A., where she was responsible for the following departments: R&D and innovation, Market analysis and research, and Agricultural service. She was also a director of FERTIAL S.P.A., an Algerian fertilizer manufacturer.
García Tejerina speaks English and French. She is unmarried and is an avid tennis fan.
