Wikispanishfood Editorial Team

With a view to promoting commercial relations for fruits and vegetables among EU and non-EU countries, India and Singapore will be the Guest Importers at Fruit Attraction 2019. At this year's event, both countries have been invited given their import activities.

At the 11th edition of the fair, organized by IFEMA and FEPEX and scheduled for October 22nd to the 24th, those two countries will be invited, and a large portion of the budget will also be allocated to attract the main players from those markets to Madrid. More than 200 professionals, among them marketers, buyers, importers and retailers will attend from India and Singapore. They will also be in the spotlight as part of the World Fresh Forum, a business networking space which will address commercial relations with India and Singapore and pave the way for business opportunities. This is being organized jointly with ICEX.

In recent years, fresh fruit and vegetable exports from Spain and the EU to Singapore have performed positively, which has been one of the main reasons why it was chosen as one of the guests at the upcoming edition of Fruit Attraction. Moreover, Singapore is an important distribution hub for the countries in the region.

Spanish exports there increased, from 4 million euros in 2014 to 9.5 million euros in 2017, the bulk of them fruit. The main fruits exported are persimmon (1.9 million euros); blueberries (1 million euros); lemons (945,917 euros); peaches (937,035 euros) and plums (811,292 euros).

According to official data for January - November 2018 from Spain's customs authority, a total of 3,502 tons were exported (7.1 million euros), of which 3,464 tons were fruit (valued at 7.02 million euros) and 38 tons were vegetables (133,938 euros).

India has performed well as an importer of Spanish and EU fruits and vegetables. In 2014, Spanish exports there amounted to 582 tons worth 546,059 euros, increasing to 2,335 tons in 2017 and 2.5 million euros, reflecting growth of 301% in volume and 358% in value. However, those volumes are small, and Fruit Attraction could help improve the Spanish sector's position in this market. From January to November 2018, exports totaled 1,728 tons and 1.6 million euros. Apples and pears were the main exports.

Southern Europe is strengthening its position as a new, growing hub when it comes to global sales of fruit and vegetables and it's also the entry point to Europe for Latin America. This strategically positions Fruit Attraction as the best platform and international meeting point for fresh food businesses.
