Adding value to spanish exports

Wine and flamenco reinforce DO La Mancha's presence in Germany and Switzerland

Wiki Spanish Food editorial team

The events to promote DO La Mancha wine were held in Cologne on May 19th and in Zurich on May 20th.A new presentation formula was designed for the occasion and was already put into practice, proving to be quite successful at the stand at the last edition of Prowein in Düsseldorf.

The initiative included a tasting of around 37 wines from 20 wineries with very high scores from a blind tasting by experts, organized by the Regulatory Council. The events in Germany and Switzerland catered to sector professionals, and both included seminars which were attended by the trade press and sommeliers, etc. In fact, the first event was led by Peer Holms, a Spanish wine expert and Vice-President of the German Sommelier Association.

Wine and flamenco

During the tasting, participants were able to sample close to 40 wines against the backdrop of live music from flamenco singer Ricardo Fernández del Moral, from Ciudad Real province. He is one of the most lauded Spanish guitarists on today's music scene. Attendees in Germany and Switzerland were delighted with the pairing of DO La Mancha wines and the music of Fernández del Moral who, in 2012, surprised the public at the 52nd edition of the International Cante de Las Minas Flamenco Festival by taking home an impressive five awards, including the"Lámpara minera" award, the most prestigious distinction in flamenco.

These actions further support the commercial efforts of DO La Mancha wines, especially in the German market, which is indubitably the largest and most loyal in terms of La Mancha wine exports. Exports to Germany have grown notably in recent years and, according to Martín Zarco, President of the Regulatory Council, "When Spain, and especially Castile-La Mancha, is a leading producer, and domestic consumption is what it is, exporting becomes necessary. To that end, notable efforts are under way, with quality wines and with the entire commercial structure of wineries, and we are seeing growth in exports every day".

This is the second promotional trip to the area in 2015, after the Prowein fair in Düsseldorf in March, the goal of which is to strengthen the positive reception and recent satisfaction of La Mancha wineries, which participated in the latest edition of the Fenavin wine fair in Ciudad Real.
