Spain exports 730 million euros worth of juice

Spaniards drank 808.15 million liters of juice and nectar last year, according to a report from the Spanish Association of Juice Producers (Asozumos). That report was revealed  during a presentation in honor of the 8th edition of World Juice Day, under the slogan "The flavor that takes care of you."

"To continue to maintain these high standards of quality and innovation that define us will enable us to remain relevant within the Spanish agri-food sector," said the President of Asozumos, Javier Lorenzo, who led the round table discussion, which included: the Director of the Spanish Association of Juice and Nectar (AEAZN), Begoña Landajo; the President of the Confederation of Consumers and Users (CECU), Fernando Móner; a doctor specialized in endocrinology and nutrition and in physical education and sports medicine, Nieves Palacios; a mixologist, Diego Cabrera, and the Deputy General Director of Food Safety for the Spanish Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition (AECOSAN), Victorio Teruel, who gave the closing remarks.

According to the report, in 2017 Spain was a leader in exports, with 775,672 tons, worth 730 million euros. That reflects a surplus of 464,786 million euros, according to data from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism. Despite this positive data, consumption in Spain slipped last year, by 2.73% compared with 2016. Dr. Palacios noted that "fruit juice has many micronutrients with positive effects for health and, often times, they allow people to achieve their daily recommended intake of fruit and vegetables, which they wouldn't be able to do otherwise."

To combat the decline, it's important for consumers to understand the difference between juices in the supermarket, as well as the legislation behind its production. In this regard, Fernando Móner said, "currently, consumers don't have sufficient tools to make the best decision from a nutritional standpoint and, therefore, it's essential that every part of the food chain work together to provide as much clarity as possible so they know which is a fruit juice, which is juice from concentrate and which is a nectar."

Last year in Spain, consumption reached 17.36 liters per person, slightly higher than the European average of 17.9 liters, and far behind Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden. To that end, the sector needs to keep working on "offering products with greater added value as one of its most important strategies so as to continue to provide consumers with quality, healthy, innovative products which meet their needs. This will indubitably help drive an industry upswing", said Begoña Landajo.

Orange juice remains the most popular flavor in Spain, accounting for 34%, followed by pineapple and peach juice, accounting for 19.2% and 17.8%, respectively. Mixed fruit juices and apple juices accounted for 12.6% and 3.9% of the market, according to data from the report.

The text also revealed that consumers' preferred point of purchase is still the food channel, with 79.1%, followed by HoReCa (12.2%) and impulse purchases (8.7%). As for the most popular packaging, cardboard takes the lead (77.4%), followed by plastic (15.7%) and glass (6.5%).

Following the round table discussion, Cabrera, who runs the cocktail bar Salmón Gurú, which recently received the Best Cocktail Menu in Spain distinction at the 2018 Coaster Awards, offered a cocktail-making demo with juice and prepared a special drink for all to try in honor of World Juice Day
