"This is the largest and most comprehensive Fruit Attraction ever"

Fruit Attraction, the International Trade Show for the Fruit and Vegetable Industry, will be held in Madrid from October 5th to the 7th. This is the eighth edition of the event which, as the Director, Raúl Calleja, tells us in this interview, is chock-a-block with new features.

Manel González.- After seven editions, Fruit Attraction has become a leading international event. What would you highlight about the eighth edition?

Raúl Calleja.- With just one month before Fruit Attraction 2016 kicks off, the space rented out by participants is 16% higher than last year, amounting to 38,300 net square meters of exhibition space. As a result, the fair is the largest and most extensive compared with any previous edition, with 1,200 exhibitors from 40 countries, and an expected attendance of 55,000 trade professionals from 100 countries.

In addition to the exhibition, Fruit Attraction will also offer a very broad program of events and activities that are sure to be well-received by attendees. Some will be organized by FEPEX, such as Methods to improve the availability of phytosanitary products for smaller crops, on which AEPLA will be collaborating; The sale, promotion and marketing of stone fruits; Access to, and the opening of, new markets to export fruits and vegetables; Variety innovation in the value chain, with collaboration by ANOVE, and the 4th Edition of Grape Attraction, the International Seedless Table Grape Conference, the goal of which is to respond to growing interest in production and distribution. It will also include the SMART AGRO event. The application of technology to generate new products and agri-food services, organized by AMETIC - COMISION SMART AGRO, and also TECHNOLOGY ATTRACTION: The future of plant technology, organized by BIOVEGEN, and the 5th Alimarket Fruit Chain Event, organized by Alimarket.

Visitors can find the latest products from all Spanish producer zones as well as an excellent international selection. This event will bring together the entire value chain in pavilions 3 through 8 at Ifema.

M. G.- One of the trends each year has been exponential growth in the area reserved by exhibitors. Have you seen growth in this area for the fair in 2016?

R. C.- As I mentioned, 2016 is shaping up to be the most global edition, with estimated participation by 1,200 exhibitors from 40 countries and 55,000 trade professionals from 100 countries. One of the priority objectives for this edition is to continue to focus on the European sales channel and that of new markets with high importing potential with a view to continue contributing to growth in companies' exports. Innovation, diversity, quality and technology at the service of a fundamental sector for the global economy. Our objective continues to be connecting international fruit and vegetable supply and demand, and our event helps fulfill that function in a way that is practical, economic and profitable. M. G.- What types of exhibitors will we find at this edition of Fruit Attraction?

We will see greater participation by all Spanish regions, especially Andalusia, Murcia, Valencia and Navarre. Outside Spain, we'll also see an increase in companies from France, Italy, and the Netherlands, as well as representatives from new countries such as Colombia, Costa Rica, Egypt and Vietnam. All of this confirms that Fruit Attraction is a key commercial event for global production, sales and distribution. Accordingly, this major event in the fruit and vegetable sector will have the largest supply and diversity on offer this year.

M. G.- What new opportunities does Fruit Attraction offer those who want to participate in the fair?

R. C.- Fruit Attraction is a young and very dynamic event in a fantastic city, where the entire fair is dedicated to creating a real business environment and an international meeting place. The variety and quality of the product exhibition, during a key month for the distribution sector's commercial planning efforts.

M. G.- Why would people want to attend the fair?

R. C.- Fruit Attraction offers visitors business opportunities; the chance to learn about new varieties, flavors and brands; the possibility of seeing the best fruits and vegetables under one roof for three whole days; the ability to commence, maintain and conclude sales processes; the opportunity to strengthen commercial relations; the ability to compare products...

The fair has become a fundamental commercial tool at the service of fruit and vegetable sales, during a month that's important for sales interactions between supply and demand all over the world. The fair has increased the number of exhibiting companies by 300% since the beginning, which confirms that it is responding to the industry and helping Spain secure a position as the best place in the world to sell fruits and vegetables, both Spanish and foreign. Fruit Attraction is a fundamental strategic tool for the fruit and vegetable sector, a useful and profitable sales tool for each company, which aims to position the Iberian Peninsula as the best place for the international supply of fresh products.

M. G.- What trends will affect the international focus of this new edition of Fruit Attraction?

R. C.- Fruit Attraction attracts the attention of an increasing number of fruit and vegetable players from different countries. The fact that the Spanish fruit and vegetable sector has a 3-day platform at which operators from 100 countries from all over the world seek out suppliers and products makes it a strategic tool for the sector, highlighting Marca España as the source of the best and most diverse fruits and vegetables from all over the world.

Spain remains the leading exporter in the world of fresh fruits and vegetables, which in 2015 expanded by 11.7% to 11.9 billion euros.
