Spain, a world leader in gastronomy

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has highlighted the quality and variety of Spain's agri-food production and supply, stating that "Our food and drink position Spain as a world leader in gastronomy."

Planas, who visited the FITUR International Tourism Fair, highlighted the importance of the combination of food, gastronomy and tourism, strong sectors in Spain with plenty in common. According to the Minister, Spain has a large variety of exceptional quality agri-food products which, together with its diverse cultures and traditions, have given rise to the Mediterranean diet, which is a varied, tasty, balanced and healthy food model.

During his visit to Fitur, Planas participated in the presentation of Almería as the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy for 2019. For the Minister, Almería has an excellent offer based on its fruit and vegetable production, and it's known as "Europe's Garden;" it also has a wealth of fish and seafood.

This distinction is based on five strategic pillars: hospitality, promotion, tourism, innovation and quality products. These make Almería Spain's capital par excellence for gastronomy, fashion, tourism and innovation, putting its quality products on display and enabling it to promote them both in Spain and internationally.

The new Alimentos de España strategy put in place by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food represents a turning point in terms of connecting with the new consumer and new society. Through this new strategy, and through the concepts of sharing, exploring, tasting and enjoying, the goal is to highlight Spain's varied agri-food system. The goal is to inform consumers about Spanish agri-food and fish products and to distinguish our agriculture, fishing and rural environment as distinguishing elements that strengthen our economy, landscape, gastronomy and culture.
