5 DE abril DE 2017

Spain achieves record exports of fruits and vegetables

Total fruit and vegetable exports in 2016 increased by 3.9%, to 12.372 billion euros. Individually, fruit exports totaled 7.288 billion euros, 2.2% more than the previous year, while exports of vegetables exceeded 5 billion years, reflecting growth of 6.4%, according to INFORMA's DBK Sector Observatory.

The European Union is the main destination for Spanish exports, accounting for 92% and 93% of fruit and vegetable sales, respectively. Germany, France and the UK are the main destination countries for both segments.

Total fruit and vegetable imports expanded by 13% and amounted to almost 2.150 billion euros. As a result, the trade balance reached a new record, with a surplus of 10.299 billion euros.

Fruit and vegetable production registered a decline in terms of value of 2.7% in 2016, dipping to 17.323 billion euros.

The fruit segment accounted for 53% of the total value, with 9.180 billion euros, up 3.8%, while vegetables accounted for 8.143 billion euros, down 9.2%, in a context of price adjustments.

The sector comprises a high number of small- and medium-sized producers, although there's a growing trend towards integration and associations through production and sales organizations.

There is a higher degree of concentration among specialized wholesale players. The total revenues for the 20 main sector operators exceeded 4.300 billion euros in 2015, while the top 30 obtained more than 5.500 billion euros, after expanding by around 12% year-on-year.
