Fruit and vegetable exports totaled 12.719 billion euros in 2018. Despite a slight slide of 0.2% year-on-year, this is the third year in a row that they surpassed 12 million euros. It's worth noting that, in 2010, when exports totaled 8.633 billion euros, they had expanded by 50%, according to Informa's DBK Sector Observatory.
In terms of segments, fruit exports increased by 0.1% in 2018, representing 59% of the total value, with 7.558 billion euros, while exports of vegetables declined by 0.8%, accounting for 41% (5.161 billion euros).
The European Union is the main destination for Spanish exports, accounting for 91% and 95% of fruit and vegetable sales, respectively. Germany, France and the UK, in that order, are the main destinations for both segments, accounting for close to 60% of sales outside Spain.
Germany accounts for 27% of the value of exports of both fruits and vegetables, followed by France, with 19% of fruit and 16% of vegetables, and the UK, with 13% of fruit and 15% of veggies.
Total fruit and vegetable imports expanded by 10% in 2018, exceeding 2.6 billion euros. As a result, the trade balance revealed a surplus of over 10 billion euros.
Fruit and vegetable production was valued at 20.169 billion euros in 2018, reflecting growth of 4.6%, though less than the 7.8% increase registered in 2017.
The sector comprises a high number of small- and medium-sized producers, although there's a growing trend towards integration and associations through production and sales organizations. There is a higher degree of concentration among specialized wholesale players. The total revenues for the 20 main sector operators exceeded 4.6 billion euros in 2017, while the top 30 obtained more than 5.95 billion euros.
