Castile-La Mancha wine makes history

Wiki Spanish Food editorial team

Exports of Castile-La Mancha wines set a new record, yielding 62.6 million euros in revenue in March, 15% more than in 2017. In year-on-year terms (April 1st 2017 to March 31st 2018), the total is 678.5 million euros, up 22% compared with the previous year.  Growth in terms of euros per liter is 32%, which "make wineries more profitable" and help "better defend the region's rural areas."

That's what the Minister of Agriculture, the Environment and Rural Development, Francisco Martínez Arroyo, said in his closing remarks at the General Assembly of the Agri-Food Cooperatives of Castile-La Mancha, held in Alcázar de San Juan, an event at which the organization's gold insignias were also presented.

According to Martínez, "It's difficult to find a product that supports us as much as wine does,", just like the cooperatives, which "support rural areas" and are "fundamental" for the region, "every way you look at it."

To that end, he thanked the 160,000 partners and the 433 agri-food cooperatives from the region for their "bravery and commitment," reflected in the organization's efforts, in areas that the Ministry of Agriculture, the Environment and Rural Development hasn't been able to focus on but where progress has been made "together" in the last few years, on issues such as the Common Agricultural Policy, the defense of water and commercial integration.
