Torres presents Esplendor, by Vardon Kennett

Wikispanishfood editorial team

The Torres family presents its first sparkling wine, made in Catalonia using the traditional method: Cuvée Esplendor 2013, by Vardon Kennett. It's made at its own high-altitude vineyards, in Penedès, more than 500 meters above sea level, which provide it with exceptional freshness and elegance. It's made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, with a small percentage of Xarel•lo, meticulously selected and harvested by hand. After aging for 30 months in the bottle, this new signature sparkling wine is available to the public, with a small number reserved especially for the foodservice segment and specialized stores.

According Mireia Torres Maczassek, who's responsible for the project and also part of the fifth generation, “We wanted to make a sparkling wine with a very specific style, giving priority to freshness and elegance from a feminine standpoint. It is a truly unique and very special project, which opens the door to a new way of understanding high-quality sparkling wines."

Esplendor, by Vardon Kennett, a cuvée Extra Brut from 2013, is fresh and vivacious, a loyal reflection of the vintage, the terrior, and the varieties used. The year 2013 saw an atypical harvest in Penedès, with more rain than usual and a dry, fresh summer, which favored slow grape maturation. The altitude of the vineyards also played a role in the quality of the base wines: Pinot Noir, which is fresh and aromatic, adds body to the mix, while the Chardonnay and Xarel•lo provide good acidity, with aromas of white fruit and citrus undertones.

This first vintage underwent complete malolactic fermentation, smoothing out the high acidity resulting from the cold weather in 2013. Other highlights include the use of native yeast in the winemaking process, chosen by the technical team; an initial partial fermentation in the barrel, which provides the wine with a certain complexity; and a second fermentation in the bottle in line with the traditional method. These measures yield a wine with fine bubbles that is elegant, fresh and balanced and has excellent aging potential.

A tribute to Vardon Kennett, a Briton who settled in Penedès

According to Miguel Torres Maczassek, Managing Director of Bodegas Torres and part of the fifth generation, “Great wines come from unique vineyards with singular stories that have always been there—they only need to be rescued from oblivion." Vardon Kennett's story fits the bill perfectly.

The new winery, renowned for making quality sparkling wines and located on the Torres family's Santa Margarida d’Agulladolç estate, in Alto Penedès, wanted to pay tribute to this UK citizen who lived on the property at the beginning of the 19th century, adopting his name.
