Positive performance by fruit and vegetables

Between January and October 2013, exports of fresh Spanish fruit and vegetables expanded by 6.5% in volume and 13% in value year-on-year, for a total of 9.1 million tons and 8.351 billion euros, respectively, according to the most recent data published by the Ministry of Economy's Department of Customs and Special Taxes. According to FEPEX, similar growth is expected in the last quarter of the year.

Through October, exports of vegetables rose by 11% in volume, to 3.6 million tons, and by 16% in value, to 3.372 billion euros. Fruit exports increased by 4% in volume and 11% in value, to 5.4 million tons and 4.978 billion euros.

Imports amounted to 1.9 million tons (+2%) and 1.373 billion euros (+18%) to October 2013. Vegetable imports totaled 887,922 tons (-1%) and 444.5 million euros (+24%), while fruit amounted to 1 million tons (+4%) and 929 million euros (+15%).

EUCOFEL, the Assembly of the European Fruit and Vegetable Trade Association, was reorganized in 2013. The group's main objectives are to defend and improve competitiveness of EU fruit and vegetable production and exports. In Spain, EUCOFEL partners include the Citrus  Management Committee and FEPEX.

In 2014, the challenge will continue to be establishing a trade, agrarian, social and labor policy which promotes production, exports and employment in the fruit and vegetable sector, according to FEPEX.
