Japan is one of the most attractive markets in the world due to consumers' high purchasing power. All of the major olive oil producers are competing to establish themselves in Japan, which imported more than 46,000 tons of oil (worth 163 million euros) in 2012. Spain is also working very hard to expand its market share there. According to data from Japanese customs, Spain sold 17,545 tons of olive oil to Japan between January and September 2013, i.e. 16% more than in the same period of 2012.
Accordingly, through its Aceites de Oliva de España brand, the Interprofesional del Aceite de Oliva de España has included Japan among the target countries in its promotional campaigns launched this fall in 13 markets on 4 continents.
The campaign was presented at an event in Tokyo, to which the media, gastronomy bloggers and catering school students were invited. The first promotional initiative, Spanish Style Home Party for Christmas, was also launched at the event.
Miyuki Matsuo, a nutritionist and gastronomy expert, was responsible for the bulk of the presentation of Spanish olive oils and for the cooking demo, during which several Christmas dishes were prepared. Actress, singer, model and gastronomy personality Maome Yuki also participated in the presentation.
