Gran Hotel Lakua, a five-star standard setter

Víctor Marcos, RV Edipress

Located in Vitoria (Álava province), Gran Hotel Lakua is easily accessible by highway from Bilbao, Madrid, Pamplona and San Sebastián, and by plane from Vitoria-Gasteiz airport. The city center is just a hop, skip and a jump away by bus and tramway. It is Vitoria's only hotel with five stars, a well-deserved rating based on the exceptional quality of its facilities, from the large rooms and apartments to Margoa restaurant (specialized in traditional Basque cuisine) to the lovely Relais Lakua Spa.

This classic white building, located in the modern neighborhood of Lakua, holds one of the best-kept secrets in Vitoria-Gasteiz. Within its walls, guests will find a space in harmony with a design based on subtle lines and pure volumes in constant balance. The color tones for the rooms were chosen specifically to encourage rest and relaxation, helped in large part by the right lighting. The use of wood and leather, most notably in the headboards, ensures the perfect backdrop of style and good taste. All rooms have direct dial telephones, climate control, a safe, a mini-bar, a pillow menu, satellite TV and internet access. The bathrooms, which are elegantly finished in marble, are equipped with a hair dryer, telephone and radio as well as a large selection of amenities.

Gran Hotel Lakua has 147 rooms, including three junior suites and two presidential suites (of more than 100 square meters), as well as 24 apartments and 8 studios (of up to 55 square meters), which are fully equipped for long-term stays (kitchens with utensils, dishes and silverware). Three rooms and one apartment are adapted for people with disabilities, and all of the hotel's signage is in Braille. The facilities are evaluated and reviewed annually by specialized consulting firm Equalitas Vitae, which certified Gran Hotel Lakua as accessible for people with disabilities.

Margoa restaurant, myriad sensations for the palate

Margoa restaurant's culinary offer includes warm salads, meat, fish, and seasonal products, and culminates in a wide assortment of desserts. Chef Fernando Etxebarri uses creativity and innovation to upgrade fresh market cuisine, creating a special selection of traditional Basque dishes for the hotel menu, the tasting menu, and the gourmet dish of the day. All dishes are prepared with top-flight products and paired with a comprehensive wine list, and prices are much more affordable than you would expect of a restaurant of this caliber. In line with the hotel's focus on customer service and attention, Margoa is open until midnight.

A more informal option is Café Garnier, which offers pinchos, sandwiches, raciones (mid-sized portions of a dish), combination platters and a menu of the day, from Monday to Friday. The hotel offers 24-hour room service, a breakfast buffet with live cooking stations, and the Piano Bar, which is ideal for an after-dinner drink or a quiet evening and offers an extensive selection of cocktails, liqueurs and beer. It is open every day, from 7.00 pm to 2.00 am (and on Fridays and Saturdays until 3.00 am).

Gran Hotel Lakua is the perfect location for meetings, conventions and social functions of all kinds. The events space has movable partitions, which can be adapted to the customer's needs, and modern audiovisual equipment; a team of experts is also on hand to provide technical support. The Hotel has free outdoor parking and a large covered garage, and is well connected to the highways from Bilbao, Madrid, Pamplona and San Sebastián, to the Vitoria-Gasteiz airport, and to the city center by bus (line 4) and tramway (Abetxuko line).

Relais Lakua Spa, views of Vitoria's skyline

The exclusive Relais Lakua Spa, on the hotel's top floor, caters to a maximum of eight people per hour. It has a Turkish bath, a Finnish sauna and two jacuzzis, an area for health and well-being treatments, and a full gym. The spa is run by a team of specialists in beauty treatments, massages, wraps and exfoliation.
