Jaén offers the flavor of the first oils

More than 100 professionals in the gastronomy and olive oil sectors, along with many visitors, attended the presentation in Madrid of the first oils from the harvest in Jaén, organized by Jaén's provincial council. These oils were produced from the first olives collected this harvest, which just commenced in the region; as a result, they have an extraordinary quality and flavor which is highly valued by the most demanding gourmets.

The event provided an opportunity to savor gastronomy from Jaén and a selection of extra virgin olive oils from brands bearing the Jaén Selección 2013 seal, granted each year to the best oils by a rigorous panel of experts. The brands include: “Castillo de Canena Royal Temprano”, from Castillo de Canena (Canena); “Melgarejo Gourmet”, from Aceites Campoliva, S.L., (Pegalajar); “Cortijo La Torre Premium”, from Aceites San Antonio, S.L.U. (Escañuela); “Dominus Cosecha Temprana”, from Monva, S.L. (Mancha Real); “Oro de Cánava”, from the cooperative “Nuestra Señora de los Remedios” (Jimena); “Oro Bailén Reserva Familiar”, from Galgón 99, S.L. (Villanueva de la Reina) and “Picualia”, from the cooperative “Virgen de Zocueca” (Bailén).

Six of the selected extra virgin olive oils are made from Picual olives and one is a single varietal made with Royal olives. These oils feature a mix of fruity notes from green olives with the herbaceous and vegetable aromas of herbs and vegetables, balanced and complex nuances which combine delicateness and a unique character. Attendees were able to learn about these qualities, as the tasting included tips for recognizing better quality oils, distinguishing their varieties and nuances, and understanding their countless applications in gastronomy and health.

Jaén is synonymous with the best olive oil in the world. The province is the leading producer (25% of all the olive oil produced worldwide this year will come from its olive groves) and an international standard-bearer for quality and excellence. Ten olive oils from Jaén are among the top 50, according to the World's Best Olive Oils Association. Olive oil is also considered a top product because of its extraordinary health benefits: it is heart-healthy, prevents cancer and delays ageing, according to recent findings from the PREDIMED study.
